Robert McNamara x 3: los dos que lo quisieron matar y el que habla bien de él

Hablar mal de Robert McNamara hoy, putearlo después de muerto, es fácil. Cualquiera puede hacerlo. Mucho más dificil es hablar bien de él con altura y convicción como hace Errol Morris, cuya opinión no es la de cualquiera por haber sido el ojo detrás de Fog of War:

Mr. McNamara saw his central role as preventing nuclear war. During his tenure as secretary of defense, there were conflicts that could have escalated into nuclear war — the confrontation over Berlin, the Cuban missile crisis.

And what about the escalation of the Vietnam War? Recently, the taped conversations between President Lyndon Johnson and his advisers have been made public. Listening to the president and Mr. McNamara, it appears that the pressure for escalation did not come from Mr. McNamara, but from Johnson. Mr. McNamara was not an enthusiast for this war. But charged with the responsibility for carrying it out, he argued for it.

Más intersante aún son las poco recordadas historias de Norman Morrison y un artista anómino que intentó ahogar a McNamara cuando iba camino a su casa de fin de semana.

Morrison era un cuákero que se inmoló a los 31 años en 1965 para protestar contra la guerra de Vietnam frente a la oficina de McNamara en el Pentágono. En 2007, el presidente de Vietnam, Nguyễn Minh Triết, visitó el lugar donde se inmoló Morrison, para homenajearlo con la lectura de un poema escrito y dedicado a él por un poeta vietnamita, Tố Hữu.

La historia del artista fue recordada por Greg Mitchell, quien cuenta que el artista vivía en Martha's Vineyard, donde McNamara tenía una casa. Cuando ambos se cruzaron en el ferry que va a la isla, el artista intentó tirarlo por la borda. Fracasó.
